Glen Johnson, the former Liverpool and England full-back has gone public with his views about Bareth Bale’s move to Tottenham Hotspur this year. Johnson who retired in 2019 feels that Bale would have been happier playing for Manchester United than Tottenham had the Red Devils pushed for him more aggressively.
Bale who moved to Real Madrid in 2013 for a record fee was being chased by both United and Hotspur. He has been out of favor with Zinedine Zidane off late and had been looking for an opportunity to move to England in the hope of getting more appearances.
Johnson feels that Manchester United were keen to pick up Bale but were lazy not to push the negotiations.
36-year-old Glen Johnson started his professional football career with West Ham United in 2002. During his 17 year long career he also featured for Chelsea, Stoke City and Portsmouth apart from Liverpool. He commanded the highest market value of 10 million Pounds when he moved to Liverpool from Stoke City in 2010.
He was a member of the English Premiership title winning Chelsea side in 2005 and 2006. Johnson also lifted the English League Winners Cup with Liverpool in 2012. He also featured in the English national team that participated in the 2010 and 2014 world cups. Johnson was a member of the national side that went to the 2012 Euro championship.
With a close to 2 decades long career, Johnson surely knows a thing or two about English football and how the premiership works. Backing Garth Bale, the former Liverpool and Chelsea defender is of the opinion that by not signing Bale, the Red Devils have lost a great opportunity to have a lethal weapon in their arsenal.
This loss for Man United though Johnson feels is a great win situation for the Spurs.
